  • Depending on environmental conditions, inherited characteristics may be advantageous, neutral, or detrimental.

  • Over time, the proportion of individuals with advantageous characteristics may increase (and the proportion with disadvantageous characteristics may decrease) due to their likelihood of surviving and reproducing.
