The Lego® connection
While helping her children find Lego® bricks for a toy they were building, Gillespie suddenly made the connection between her own search efforts and a better hypothesis to explain the happy-face spider polymorphism! When her sons asked her to look for a red brick amidst all the other colored bricks, she was able to find them quickly. However, when her sons asked her to look for blue, black, and red bricks at the same time, finding any one of them was difficult. Could it be equally difficult to search for spiders with varying color patterns? She recalled just such an experiment on predator search images and blue jays.
