Overview: In this 12-item multiple-choice evolution test, wrong answers are designed to tap into common student misconceptions. It can be used to diagnose evolution misconceptions related to natural selection and to assess the effectiveness of instruction in helping students overcome their misconceptions.Author/Source: UC Museum of Paleontology Grade level: 13-16 Time: 15 minutes Teaching tips: The items in this test can be used in many ways. If used as a pre-test, student responses can help guide your instruction to correct misconceptions. As a post-test, the instrument can be used to assess the effectiveness of instruction at addressing misconceptions. In addition, individual items can be used as clicker questions in lecture or as the topics of minute papers, in which students are asked to explain why each possible answer is right or wrong.
